Vaginal Rejuvenation: Surgery, Lasers or Radiofrequency?
If you are a woman who is experiencing painful or unsatisfying sex, you are not alone. After menopause approximately 40% of women have vaginal looseness, which results in decreased sexual sensation for both the woman and her partner. And, after menopause, 50% of women will have vaginal dryness, discomfort, and pain during intercourse some or all of the time.
Unfortunately, many women delay seeking medical attention for these very common vaginal problems. And many others never seek treatment at all. Some women feel too ashamed or embarrassed to discuss this sensitive topic with a medical provider. Still other women erroneously believe that painful intercourse is “just part of aging” and they don’t know that there are effective treatments available!
The good news is that Tutera Medical in Scottsdale, AZ now offers Viveve vaginal rejuvenation. This revolutionary, painless, state-of-the-art treatment can permanently remedy vaginal laxity and painful sex with only one single treatment — without messy creams, without painful surgery, and with no downtime.
Different Types of Vaginal Rejuvenation
Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation (Vaginoplasty)
Up until the early 2000s the only way a woman could effectively tighten a loose, lax vagina was vaginoplasty surgery – which is still performed by plastic surgeons to this day.
Vaginoplasty surgery requires anesthetic and is often done under general anesthesia. Long incisions are made on the inside of the vagina, and the vaginal walls (and sometimes muscles) are stretched and pulled tight and then stitched into place.
Recovery from vaginoplasty surgery takes up to two or three weeks, with no tampons or intercourse for eight weeks. Although vaginoplasty is a relatively routine surgery, it comes with the same risks as any surgery, including: scarring, risk of infection, prolonged pain, and adverse reaction to anesthesia.
And, while vaginoplasty surgery tightens the vagina, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) reports that it does not improve sexual sensitivity or orgasms.
Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation (MonaLisa®, diVa®)
Around the year 2006 doctors started using lasers for vaginal rejuvenation. In cases of mild to moderate vaginal laxity, lasers eliminated the need for painful surgery and a long recovery period.
While certainly an improvement over surgery, laser vaginal rejuvenation is still an ablative treatment – meaning that the laser removes (ablates) the top layer of vaginal tissue. As the body naturally heals the “wounded” vaginal area it produces new collagen and elastin – the building blocks of healthy young tissue.
Laser vaginal rejuvenation is painful enough that most patients require local or topical anesthetic. Laser vaginal tightening also requires 3 separate treatments – with a few days of recovery and down time, including avoiding intercourse for several days afterwards.
Radiofrequency Vaginal Rejuvenation (Viveve®)
Roughly ten years after laser vaginal rejuvenation was FDA approved, further advancements in vaginal tightening and restoration made the procedure faster and even more comfortable, with little to no downtime, no pain and no recovery period.
In 2014 Viveve® was FDA approved to rejuvenate the vagina with gentle radiofrequency waves, rather than lasers. Viveve® uses cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) that uniformly delivers gentle volumetric heat energy to deeper vaginal tissue, while simultaneously cooling delicate surface tissue. Viveve’s® CMRF system is the only vaginal rejuvenation treatment on the market with algorithmically-controlled deep heating combined with surface cooling for comfort.
The radiofrequency energy stimulates the body’s own natural production of collagen and elastin – making the vaginal walls thicker, tighter, and more elastic. And increased hyaluronic acid production improves lubrication, which reduces or eliminates dryness, itching and pain during intercourse. As an added benefit, Viveve RF treatments also help reduce or eliminate the bladder leaks (incontinence) that often occurs after childbirth or during menopause.
Since Viveve® achieves tightening and lubricating of the vagina – without the tissue damage of lasers – there is no pain, no anesthetic needed, and no downtime. And, while laser vaginal rejuvenation requires three treatments, only a single treatment is needed with Viveve®, which only takes less than an hour.
Even better, because radiofrequency energy increases blood flow to the area, Viveve vaginal rejuvenation also improves sexual sensation and increases orgasm – making sex more enjoyable for women of every age. Viveve® vaginal rejuvenation is also affordable – usually less than 1/4 of the cost of vaginoplasty surgery.
