Why PRP Microneedling is Called a “Vampire Facial®”
PRP is an abbreviation for Platelet Rich Plasma – a component found in everybody’s blood. Even if you aren’t’ familiar with “PRP” you’ve probably heard of the so-called “Vampire Facial®” that was made famous on social media by reality stars like Kim Kardashian and Bar Refaeli. In actuality, PRP Microneedling and the sensationalized “Vampire Facial®” are the same treatment! “Vampire Facial®” is just a trademarked term used by some doctors to make the treatment sound more dramatic.
But – whatever name you give it – the gorgeous, youthful skin of the celebrities who swear by “Vampire Facials®” demonstrates that PRP facials really do turn back the clock on aging!
The PRP Facial Process
The name “Vampire Facial®” – and the accompanying “shocking” social media photos of the somewhat bloody procedure – may be daunting. But PRP facials are actually safe and not controversial at all. In fact, PRP has been used for many years by orthopedic doctors and in sports medicine to regenerate and repair injured joints.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is simply obtained from a quick, routine blood draw from the patient’s arm. It only takes a small amount of blood (about 10cc) to provide the platelet rich plasma for the PRP facial procedure.
The patients’ extracted blood is then spun to separate the platelets from the red and white blood cells in the blood. This concentrated serum of platelets (PRP) is rich in the body’s growth factors. The PRP is then delivered into the skin via microneedles which helps the growth factors to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin. Over time, this helps the body repair its own cells.
The Science Behind PRP Facials
The PRP
As human skin ages it becomes damaged by the UVs sun rays, gravity, environmental exposure, and toxins such as smoking and air pollution. Genetics also play a role in how well one’s skin ages when confronted with these factors. With age, the production of collagen and elastin fibers – the scaffolding of healthy, smooth, tight, skin – also declines.
Human blood is made of plasma, red and white blood cells, and platelets. These platelets contain certain proteins that help the blood to clot and that stimulate the body’s natural healing mechanisms. When the blood is spun, the plasma containing highly concentrated levels of these healing proteins can be separated out.
When the PRP is then applied to the skin, it stimulates the body to begin repairing itself, building new healthy skin cells and increasing production of the essential building blocks collagen and elastin.
The Microneedling
Microneedling is the process of piercing the skin with ultrafine, clinical-grade, sterile micro-needles. The tiny needle pricks are perceived as “wounds” by the body – so it sets in motion the body’s natural repair processes. This helps improve skin texture and boosts collagen production.
Additionally, the microneedling creates tiny micro-channels that allow the PRP to penetrate deep into the lower layer (dermis) of the skin – where it can go to work repairing and restoring the skin’s structure, tone and tightens.
The PRP may also be injected directly into the treatment area via syringe in more serious problem areas – such under the eyes and around the mouth (smile lines).
PRP Facial Results
The growth factors introduced during the PRP facial go to work stimulating cell growth and repair – and continue regenerating the skin for up to 3 or more months after the PRP treatment. A single PRP facial can reveal dramatic results – but for optimal improvement in more damaged skin, we generally recommend a series of treatments. Multiple treatments may be scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart, with the number depending upon the degree of skin damage we are treating.
Because the PRP Facial repairs the skin “from the inside out” results such as improved skin tone and texture, fewer wrinkles and a tighter, firmer face can last up to an amazing 2 years!
And, PRP facials are among the safest anti-aging treatments because they only use the patient’s own blood to stimulate natural cellular repair. This means there is no risk of allergic reaction and no possibility of serious side effects or complications!
Skin Issues PRP Facials Can Help
Both men and women can suffer from sagging skin, poor skin elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and hollow contours as they age – all of which the PRP facial process can improve. And PRP facials are also effective at reducing scars from acne, chicken pox, surgery, or injuries.
