Read on to learn about the research and science behind Viveve vaginal rejuvenation and how it works to remedy vaginal laxity, improve sexual sensation, and reduce bladder incontinence.
What Causes Vaginal Laxity?
Just like skin on the face and body, vaginal tissue is made up of collagen and elastin fibers. The collagen supplies the “scaffolding” that supports thick, firm, healthy vaginal walls – while elastin is what gives the vagina its elasticity and “snap back”.
With age and the hormone decline of menopause, the body produces less collagen and elastin – which causes vaginal walls to become thin, dry, loose, and fragile. Pregnancy, childbirth, and other stressors on the vagina (such as weight gain) can also cause vaginal laxity, as well as urinary incontinence.
But “Viveve” – named for the Greek word for New Life (“Vive”) – can reverse these problems and restore pleasure, enjoyment, and vitality to a woman’s sex life.
Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Technology
Viveve vaginal rejuvenation uses cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) that has been clinically proven to tighten and regenerate vaginal walls. This treatment uniformly delivers gentle but powerful thermal heat energy deep into the vaginal tissue, while simultaneously cooling the delicate surface tissue.
While there are other laser and radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenations on the market, Viveve is the only one with algorithmically-controlled heating and cooling. The deep radiofrequency heat stimulates the body’s natural collagen and elastin production under the skin – while the cooling keeps the external tissue comfortable.
Cryogen-cooled monopolar radiofrequency (CMRF) technology emits volumetric heating at precise temperatures that have been clinically proven to stimulate “neo-collagenesis” – the natural production of collagen. A very slim wand is used to deliver the monopolar energy, which penetrates 3-5 mm deep into the connective tissue of the vagina.
Capacitive coupling technology distributes the RF energy evenly across the treatment area for uniform heating of the vaginal walls. At the same time, a technology called “reverse thermal gradient” both cools the treatment area and protects the surface mucosa from damage.
Radiofrequency is a much more comfortable treatment modality than lasers, which rely on “ablation” (burning off) the top layer of the skin in order to stimulate collagen production.
How Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Improves Sex
As many as 40% of women experience some looseness of the vaginal canal causing a loss of sexual pleasure during intercourse. And approximately 50% of women will experience vaginal dryness, discomfort, and pain during intercourse after menopause.
The Viveve procedure applies radiofrequency heat to the walls of the vagina by inserting a slender wand. This RF energy stimulates the body’s own natural collagen and elastin production. This strengthens and thickens the muscles and tissues in the walls of the vagina, in addition to improving elasticity.
As a result of the thickened and strengthened tissue, the vagina walls feel tighter. This not only increases sexual sensation for the woman and her partner, but also reduces vaginal dryness. And sex once again becomes pleasurable!
Additionally, Viveve’s radiofrequency energy improves blood circulation in the vagina and surrounding pelvic area. This improved blood flow increases sexual sensation and is reported to improve the intensity and frequency of orgasms.
Further, Viveve vaginal rejuvenation using radiofrequency also increases small nerve fiber density in the vagina – which has been clinically shown to reduce the time it takes for a woman to achieve orgasm by one third to one half!
How Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation Bladder Leaks
Stress incontinence occurs when a woman’s pelvic muscles and tissues that support the urethra (opening of the bladder) become weak. The extra pressure on these muscles and tissues caused by pregnancy and childbirth is one cause of stress incontinence. Additionally, weight gain, hormonal changes, and aging can also contribute to embarrassing bladder leaks. Stress urinary incontinence often surfaces during perimenopause, when the accompanying hormonal decline causes the vaginal tissue and muscles to become thinner and less elastic.
When Viveve vaginal rejuvenation’s radiofrequency stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the pelvic area, it restores tone, tightness and elasticity to the muscles and tissues that surround the bladder opening. This reduces bladder leaks and improves urinary control.
Additionally, the RF energy applied inside the vagina shrinks the mucosa covering the bladder and the rectum. This also helps to reduce symptoms of mild-to-moderate stress incontinence.
Clinical Tests of Viveve Vaginal Rejuvenation
Viveve conducted multiple blind, randomized, clinical research trials to measure and confirm its effect on women experiencing vaginal laxity or looseness after vaginal childbirth.
The Viveve medical research studies revealed:
- NO serious adverse events or side effects in any patients treated in the study
- 90% of patients in the study reported significant improvement of arousal and/or orgasm
- Vaginal tightening results of a single session lasted 12 months or longer
